It was only in the 15th and 16th centuries, during the Zaporizhian Cossacks era, that Ukrainian horilka was exported to Moscow, and it gained popularity as an alcoholic beverage outside of the country. Of course, this drink can be found in every Ukrainian city or village, but the small town Nemyriv, in the Vynnitsya region, made it a popular worldwide.

Horilka in Ukrainian or Vodka in Russian is a typically colorless liquor, usually distilled from fermented grain. Except for insignificant amounts of flavorings, horilka consists of water and alcohol ethanol. Horilka usually has an alcohol content ranging from 35 to 60 percent by volume. According to the Vodka Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, Mendeleev thought the perfect percentage to be 38, but since spirits in his time were taxed on their strength the percentage was rounded up to 40 to simplify the tax computation. Nowdays you can also find 38 percent horilka, but is usually called "Light". Although horilka is generally consumed "straight" in its Central European and Scandinavian homeland, its growth in popularity elsewhere owes much to its usefulness in cocktails and other mixed drinks, such as the Bloody Mary, the Bullshot, and the Vodka Martini also known as a Vodkatini , a dry martini made with vodka instead of gin.
One of the popular myths is that vodka is a purely Russian invention. All strong spirits are called Horilkas. It is a common misconception that a quality strong spirit can be produced from the potatoes. I put a whole chilli pepper in each bottle in order to underline the authentic Cossack character of this spirit.
The word horilka may also be used in a generic sense in the Ukrainian language to mean vodka or other strong spirits and etymologically is similar to the Ukrainian word for burning - hority. Horilka is usually distilled from grain usually wheat or rye , though it can, exceptionally, also be distilled from potatoes ,  honey, sugar beets etc. Historically, outside Ukraine, pertsivka is generally referred to when people speak of horilka, although pertsivka itself is just one type of horilka. It is believed that horilka was not as strong as today with about 20 percent alcohol by volume 40 proof. Ukrainian tradition has also produced various derivatives of horilka.
