No sex before marriage-When asked what the Bible has to say about sex, most people will have this response. However, when asked to provide exactly where this rule is listed in the Bible, the answer from many Christians is much less confident. My belief that premarital sex is sinful has been shattered. The truth is that we are having the wrong conversation over and over again. In an attempt to justify what is believed to be common knowledge, we are pulling at any verse that has an inkling of resemblance to premarital sex.
Sex Before Marriage - Is it Really a Sin? What Does the Bible Say?
Does the Bible teach that sex before marriage is a sin? This is because we live in a world of tweets and quick soundbites where people rarely have enough time for context. The thinking often goes: If there is no Bible verse that answers my question, then the Bible must not have an answer to my question. I used to get asked this question often when I did college campus ministry, and I still hear it as a pastor.
All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Whether it be premarital sex, adultery, or viewing pornography, sexual sin alters our brain function and, when indulged in repeatedly, can lead to a seared conscience — an actual brain phenomenon that numbs us to guilt and conviction of our wrongdoing. When porn is viewed, several things happen to the brain involving powerful hormones — two of which are Oxytocin and Vasopressin. Often called the love hormone, oxytocin is released when we hug or kiss a loved one.
Perhaps the best book of the Bible about the joys of sex is the Song of Songs as it reminds us sex is strictly for marriage. God loves sex. I want them to look forward to it but remain pure. It is not limited to genital stimulation and the release of tension through a quick and simple orgasm. The more cosmic experiences utilizing sexual energy create ecstatic states.
